The days are getting colder and wetter but P5/6 have been working hard on a variety of tasks this week.

In Maths we have started to look at Column Subtraction.  This is a very tricky concept but there has been a lot of effort shown by everyone.  We explored breaking 4 digit numbers up into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands and how that can help us when we do this subtraction method.  We did a lot of practicing on whiteboards with a partner and we know that we will get a lot better at this if we practice some more.  There was also a challenging task for some people when we removed digits from several places in the calculation.  We sometimes had to work backwards from the final answer to find the missing digits.  Lots of good talking has taken place during this activity.  Well done for showing determination and resilience during this task boys and girls!

We used the wonderful season of Autumn to write a descriptive story.  We focused on including our feelings and the use of a variety of descriptive language techniques e.g. adjectives, alliteration, similes. onomatopoeia,  personification and metaphors.  The writing has been simply marvellous!

On Wednesday we enjoyed singing our songs for the "BIg Sing" event with the help of Mrs Mair.  The words of three songs have been posted on Seesaw and they children must try to learn the words before Mrs Mair's next visit in two weeks.  The singing was beautiful and we are getting a lot better at using our faces in a more expressive manner when we sing.

We have started our Christmas Enterprise and made triangle shaped boxes and beaded snowmen keyrings.  The keyrings will be placed inside the boxes to sell at our stall.  We will also make Christmas bird decorations using recycled cardboard and paper off cuts.  It is great to use up the offcuts and it links very well with our John Muir award work.  We know that we need to play our part to help planet Earth.

Our artworks for the Dunfermline Rotary Young Artist Competition is nearing completion and we have had a lot of fun creating these  We used a variety of materials and explored different techniques. Our poems for the competiton is almost completed too. Some children wrote acrostic poems, some did Haikus and some people attempted a performance poem.  These will come home so the children can make a video of themselves reciting their poems. A fabulous effort!

Our class novel is "The Last Bear" by Hannah Gold. We researched polar bear facts and created a diorama.  We wrote all our facts on the inside and back and then created an icy scene with card and paper.  They are fantastic.

We wish everyone a restful weekend!
