We've had another busy week, starting our 8 week Outdoor Learning John Muir Challenge.

In Literacy we completed a comprehension exercise on John Muir and discovered all about his life and contribution to environmental issues. We did our Baseline Assessment for Writing, using a picture of marshmallows toasting on a campfire for a prompt and we continued our grammar work, this week looking at homophones, synonyms and antonyms. We also read the next few chapters of our group readers and did a follow up spelling activity for our homework spelling words.

We looked at decimals this week in Numeracy. First we completed a revision worksheet on fractions to consolidate previous learning, then matched, converted and sequenced the fractions with their corresponding decimals. We progressed to adding simple decimals mentally and using vertical ( chimney ) sums.

In Drama we practised simple mime scenarios and worked in small groups to create ' still photographs'. For Art we studied the work of Vincent Van Gogh and started our own interpretation of his famous 'Starry Night' painting. We copied his brush technique and use of bold colours. We also listened to Don McLean's song all about Vincent and heard about his very sad, troubled life.

In P.E. we continued our work on developing our athletics skills. We set up stations with a variety of ball and movement activities, such as travelling whilst bouncing a ball around cones and standing long jump.

For our first Outdoor Learning John Muir Challenge, we had to look at nature in our local environment. We recorded examples of naturally occuring and man made evidence and discovered how much of an impact humans actually have.

We conducted a friction experiemnt as part of our 'Forces, Electricity & Waves' topic. We learned how to write up a science experiment correctly and the importance of simple but clear instructions. Using a plastic bottle filled with rice, we pushed a pencil down into the middle of the bottle and discovered that the friction created between the bottle, rice and pencil was great enough that we were able to lift the whole thing up by the pencil alone. Clever !! We look forward to trying more experiemnts soon.

Have a lovely weekend.
