Good afternoon,
This week was World Book Week with World Book Day on Thursday.
World Book Day is an annual charity event that began in 1995 and is celebrated in the UK and Ireland on the first Thursday in March. On World Book Day, every child is given a voucher to spend on whatever book they want, with the hopes of encouraging kids to read more. Reading more will help to improve their vocabulary while learning new information, and enhancing their creativity in the process! On Monday`s Seesaw you can access a link to see snippets of some of the most suitable books for P1 children.
In the age of digitalisation, it’s ever so important to encourage children to read books and help them see the value of literature. By having events like World Book Day, teachers and parents can focus on shedding the light on the importance of reading. It’s always more engaging and fun for children to do something that feels a bit more special than the everyday tasks.
It’s also a time when authors, illustrators, books, and reading can be appreciated and celebrated in over 100 countries around the world.
In primary 1 we were very fortunate in being able to participate in a virtual event with our favourite authors and illustrators, each day of the week.
On Monday we joined Julia Donaldson in a joyful show to celebrate her new book, ` A Pocketful of Songs`. We sang, clapped and enjoyed a medley of stories and songs based on her and Axel Scheffler`s award winning books.
On Tuesday we went on a journey with Sara Miller, award winning illustrator, into the magical world of animals from the book `Party Parade’. We learned how she designed and edited the cover of the book.
On Wednesday we strolled around eight magnificently silly museums in a giggle-fest session packed with drawing activities. I hope you enjoyed seeing how we got on, on Seesaw.
On Thursday the UK`s number one picture book illustrator, Axel Scheffler, showed us how to create different animal expressions from the characters in his new book, Happy Bunnies.
On Friday we worked with illustrator, Onyinye Iwu in a creative session inspired by her upcoming picture book, `We sang across the Sea; The Empire Windrush and Me.
We hope you enjoyed seeing us in the sessions on the Seesaw platform each day this week.
On World Book Day we also took part in Canmore`s Book Swap. We were all delighted to browse the selection and then choose one to take home to share with our families. We hope to take part in another book swap soon.
Have a super weekend
