Good afternoon,

Burns Day on Tuesday was thoroughly embraced by P1a this week. The children enjoyed tasting vegetarian haggis and oatcakes, listening to the sound of the bagpipes, designing their own tartan, learning Scottish action songs, games and rhymes, and sharing stories of Loch Ness Monsters and Hairy Haggis. I was very proud of the `give-it-a-go’ attitude displayed as Robin Reidbriest by JK Annand was recited by many of the pupils. Isla MacLeod was our winner this year with a very confident performance. Well done Isla!
In numeracy we were learning addition, using the numicon as learning aids and in mental maths, consolidating our ability to tell the number before any given number within 10. Next week we will continue to work on addition, expanding our use of material from numicon, to fingers, cubes and counters. In mental maths we will tell numbers between 2 numbers within 10.
In writing we were practising writing in a full sentence, ensuring it starts with a capital letter, has a finger space between each word and ends with a full stop.
In reading we learned to read and spell the common word, `put’ as well as practising all of the other common words taught. Next week we are looking forward to learning the sounds made when the 2 letters s and h , and w and h go together. We also practised the other reading strategy of ; looking at the first letter of an unknown word and looking in the picture for a clue.
In listening and talking/ topic we shared what we had learned from our parents/grandparents about toys in their past. I learned that I was not the only one skating around Dunfermline with the old – style roller skate shoe!
We rounded off the week by taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. We were particularly pleased to see a robin, at last. It seems that our fat balls worked after all!

Have a super weekend and remember to vote for Mondays story time book by commenting on the post on Seesaw.
