The week has been a very hard-working week and we have now fully moved on to our new topic of ‘The World at War’. Pupils have now brought home their learning on Japan, which has been such a super area of study.

In literacy, we have begun our new class novel – Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. We have studied the text and used it to improve our reading comprehension skills. We have started comparing the book to the film and have discussed the differences between them. This week we have also looked at how we continue to write in the style of the author with a focus on writing from the viewpoint of the main animal character. The theme of remembrance has enabled pupils to study WW1 poetry and discuss their thoughts on why we remember.

In numeracy, we have been continuing our work on subtraction and our quick recall of our tables. The class are feeling more confident in this skill now. Our mental arithmetic challenges are proving very popular and a real competitive element is clearly coming through as they challenge themselves to improve their scores each time.

In topic and art, we have looked at the famous Lord Kitchener army recruitment poster as well as what caused World War 1 to start with some great discussions coming from this.

In ICT, the class have been learning about emailing. Each pupil now has their own email address contained with their school GLOW account and have been sending and receiving emails from Mrs McIntosh.

The week ended with a dress-down day to celebrate Children in Need Day. Thank you to everyone who contributed towards raising funds for such a worthwhile cause.

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend and share some well-deserved family time together.

Mr. Morgan.
