P7 have just worked so hard this week, I am very proud of their efforts.

We finished the week by looking at our new STEM focus of designing a building that uses sustainable energy. The first element of this was to look at how wind-turbines work and how we create rotations that can be converted into electricity. This was not as easy as it might seem but the class loved discovering as they learned.

In Numeracy, we have been looking at fractions, decimal fractions and percentages and started with looking at how we would explain what these are to others. Placing children in the position of having to explain their thinking really helps to deepen their understanding and some found it quite challenging.

In topic this week, we looked at the end of WWI and the inter-war years. This raised lots of fantastic discussions in class about how Hitler came to power. I was very pleased with the level of maturity that was evident during these discussions.

The class completed their Burns recital challenge on Friday and their level of performance was very good indeed. Lots of clear diction, actions and expression being used. It was so lovely to hear the Scots dialect being used again. The class voted for their favourites and the successful pupils are to present again to Mrs Howie and Mrs McIntosh on Tuesday the 25th.

Also on the 25th, is our class Burns Ceilidh. In the afternoon, P7 will join with P6/7 to enjoy a celebration of Scottish Dance and poetry. This week in Health and Wellbeing we learned the St Bernard’s Waltz. Along with the Canadian Barn Dance that we learned last week and other dances the class knew already, our ceilidh is shaping up to be great fun. Please can children come to school that Tuesday dressed smartly in their school uniforms (or wearing something tartan over it) instead of their usual PE clothes. This is not a dress-down day but something tartan that they could quickly put on, a tartan top, sash, or strip of material etc would be ideal. It is our hope to record parts of the ceilidh and post these for you to enjoy on Seesaw.

The week’s Talking and Listening presentations were just super! It was clear that the children really enjoyed researching and then presenting their findings. Our work on presentation skills continues in our homework activity and the focus will be on eye-contact. Please choose a new subject to research and present from the homework grid in Seesaw. Homework is due from Tuesday the 25th.

Congratulations to this week’s Social Target winner, Seb Sandu for showing resilience with his learning.

Finally, just a quick reminder that in our topic next week we will be covering the Holocaust. Next Thursday, the 27th of January, is Holocaust Memorial Day and it is only fitting and respectful that we cover this subject next week. This is always a difficult subject to learn about and could I ask that you discuss and support your child with this at home too. Thank you for your understanding in this.

I hope that you all have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Take care,

Mr. Morgan.
