Dear parents and carers,

First of all, can I extend a massive thank you to those of you who offered to come on the trip and those who came. Our trip to Edinburgh was great fun, enjoyed by all and a wonderful way for the children to consolidate all their learning from our Edinburgh Topic. We completed a landmark scavenger hunt of places we had studied. We also noted additional landmarks that they found of interest on the way (e.g. JK Rowling’s handprints, the Writer’s Museum and the City Chambers). The walking tour gave context to our learning around map reading and our trip to the museum offered choice and exploration to the children, as well as hands on experience with science and technology displays and an opportunity to see the work of Edinburgh artist, Paolozzi. This artist inspired much of our artwork in 1st term. The children were wonderful representatives of our school.

We are working on our enterprise topic, inspired by our John Muir Award, and are developing our dexterity and our experience working with textiles. Printing, dyeing and machine sewing is all part of the construction of our products.
In maths, we continue to work between maths and addition and are concentrating on interpreting real life maths problems presented in words into sums. This combines the skills of literacy comprehension, mental maths and choosing appropriate numeracy strategies.

Our literacy circles cover each of the following every week: reading in a group (with reading at home to follow), a spelling task, a comprehension task and a short handwriting task. This is a gentle reminder that the children also have chapters to read at home and are encouraged to read aloud for at least some of this, to help develop their flow and confidence in speaking and reading aloud.
There is also a weekly spelling task and a task of choice from the homework grid which is near the top of the learning journal. We appreciate your support with this.

Please see SeeSaw for additional photos,
Kind regards,
Mrs Brand and Mrs Elvin
