For maths this week we have continued our learning on subtraction. We have been learning to subtract 3-digit numbers using the blank number line strategy, for example 340-180 or 443-271. This strategy uses our knowledge of place value to partition the numbers, our knowledge of number bonds and the strategy of counting backwards. We have been consolidating our knowledge of number bonds, as we need to be able to mentally recall our number bonds quickly to help us subtract. We will continue to consolidate this skill in our mental maths sessions next week. We have also been working on identifying parts of a circle. Children were learning how to use a compass to draw a circle and were creating some lovely pieces of art, using circles.

We observed our leaf experiment from last week and saw that the food colouring had started to move up the stem of the leave and through the veins. We therefore learned at water travels through a leaf from the stem, up the midrib and then into the veins. For writing we wrote a report about our leaf experiment. We looked at a science experiment report and learned about the different features for example title, subtitles, time connectives and images. We then put these features into our own writing.

For Outdoor learning this week we were investigating trees. We looked at the different trees in our school grounds. We drew the trees; did bark rubbings and measured the trees girth of the tree using measuring tapes. We also estimated the height of the trees and measured them using the pencil to show the length and then measuring this with a meter stick or a trundle wheel.

We continued to make our Sock Snowies in Enterprise. Children were also making an advertising poster for our Hot Chocolate Reindeer. These will be made with Mrs Elvin.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you,
Mrs Elvin, Mrs Forrest & P6
