This week has had a very Scottish theme to it in primary 5, as we celebrated Robert Burns Day.
I have to say I was just so impressed with the Scots poetry recitations performed by the children. Every single one of them had made a real effort to learn their poems and I was so proud of them for their efforts, resilience and perseverance with a task that can be quite challenging for many. Congratulations to our finalists Emily Staff, Katie Couper, Natalia Trebicka and Megan Fraser, but also a huge congratulations to everyone for having a go and doing their best.
This week we continued reading our novel based in Scotland. One of the main characters is Glaswegian, and we have started our own Scots dictionaries explaining some of the Scots words we are learning from her. We also started our block of poetry writing having fun writing some alliterative poems in Scots. Some of these were very amusing as we had
‘Daft dugs drappin their dookers in the dub’ and ‘ Peerie puggies pentin picters.’
Our Scottish theme continued with our social studies this week. As we have been learning about peasant life in medieval times, we have started our own weaving with wool. I am not sure we will be able to produce blankets or clothes but we are loving making our own little works of art.
Another big highlight of our week has been taking part in the Big Schools Birdwatch, an annual survey done by the RSPB to monitor bird life. We all spent some time watching and recording the birds spotted in our grounds, and we have sent our results to the RSPB to help them in their important work.
I hope you have a lovely weekend
