Good afternoon,
I hope you have all enjoyed the first day of your long weekend.
This week in Primary 4 a big highlight has been our trip to the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum and the Carnegie Library. The children had the opportunity to take part in lots of activities to consolidate and extend their learning about the history and development of Dunfermline.
At the library we practised our skills in reading maps of old Dunfermline, got to dress up as characters from the past and play with puppets and we got to design our own linen pattern. The dressing up was very popular, as you would have seen in our pictures on Seesaw, but most of the children did not fancy wearing the big collars and cuffs to school.
At the museum we got to dress up as linen weavers - and I have to say the children did suit the flat caps. We then had fun handling household and school objects from the past and trying to work out what they were used for. There was a lot of discussion about the school belt! We also got to visit the Andrew Carnegie cottage to see how people used to live in these days. The children were astonished to learn that everybody lived in one room and had to share beds - and even more astonished to learn what a chamber pot was!
The trip was a super way to finish off our topic on Dunfermline, and huge thanks must go to Mrs Forsyth and Mrs Smithson who kindly gave up their time to come along and help.
In numeracy this week we have been working on calculating change. A large number of children have found this quite challenging, and we will continue to work on this next week in class. I think this may be challenging for children as society has had a big shift towards using card payments and children are not seeing adults handling cash to the same extent, or using cash themselves. You might like to support your child in their learning by playing shops with them at home, and asking them to pay for items and to give change.
Most of you will have received your Cauliflower Card orders home with you today. If you did not get it today then it will be with you soon. Likewise, books that have been ordered from the book fair should be with you at the beginning of next week.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Mrs Haddow
