Whit a stowed wik it's bin in Primary 4!
We have been so busy learning about all things Scottish this week. We started the week by learning a little about Robert Burns and his famous poems, as we are going to be running our annual Scottish Poetry Recitation event once again. The children all have their Scots poem home to learn, with some guidance from me. We started the week by listening to someone reciting the poem so that we could get a feel for the mood of the poem and how to read it with expression.
We then went on to identify the Scots words in them, and to try working out what they meant in the context of the poem. The children had some really good suggestions, and we used a Scots dictionary to find out if we were right. In drama we had lots of fun playing a game using different types of 'voice.' This gave us some ideas about the types of voices the characters in our poems might use, and we practised our poems using different 'voices.' Please continue to support your child to learn their poem at home.
In numeracy we have started on multiplication. The children are well warned that I will be nagging them, and you, to practise their times tables at home. While we will practise them at school, they need lots of repetition and practise to be able to recall the facts quickly. This does not need to be lengthy practise, little and often is best e.g when standing in a queue or driving a short distance somewhere, you could ask your children some tables questions such as 'What is 5 x 5?' and 'How many 3's are in 21?'
So much of their numeracy, and maths, moving forward relies on a knowledge of times table facts so it is very important that the children learn these.
I hope you have a fun weekend,
Mrs Haddow
