Good afternoon,
I hope you all had a lovely October break. The children have been sharing lots of the great activities that they enjoyed and it sounds like lots of fun was had by everyone – everything from water parks to trips to the park and visiting friends and family.
The children have settled well into the new term, despite the much anticipated Hallowe’en disco. There were lots of tired little faces in class today after last night, but they seem to have had a great time.
This week we have started our numeracy topic of addition and we are looking at different strategies for addition. This week we were learning to use the partitioning strategy, so if you are not sure what this is then you might ask your child to explain this to you.
In literacy we have started our new class novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and we have been practising our summarising skills, thinking carefully about what the main points Roald Dahl is making in each chapter are. With practise we are getting better at sorting out main ideas from interesting details.
Our class novel will link in to our social studies topic for this term where we will be looking at Fairtrade and, in particular, how this affects the chocolate industry. This will start in a few weeks, as at the moment we are busy investigating and learning about magnetic forces in science. We had a fantastic time discovering, through play, all about attraction and repulsion, and the different poles on magnets.
Next week we will start on our new timetable. This means that PE will be on a Tuesday and a Wednesday, and outdoor learning will be on a Friday. Children should come to school dressed appropriately for these activities. In outdoor learning we will be starting work on the Natural Connections First Level Award. This involves a commitment to around 30 hours of outdoor learning, so we will be outdoors in all but very extreme weather. As we go into colder, and possibly wetter days, the children should come on Fridays with warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and a change of shoes e.g. wellies, old trainers.
This term’s homework grids will be posted on Seesaw on Monday, and reading homework will begin next week.
I hope you have a Spooktacular weekend
Mrs Haddow
