Good afternoon everyone,

It has been lovely to see all the boys and girls back in school this week after their holiday. I do hope they all managed to relax and enjoy themselves.

This week we have started our Numeracy block on division. The children have been introduced to what division means. They have also had opportunities to explore different strategies which will help them solve division problems including linking knowledge of multiplication to division problems, counting in 2s and 10s, drawing a picture of the problem and using concrete materials to physically divide into groups.
We have also started our new project which is all about the Ancient Egyptians. The children have discussed what they already know about this project. They have also thought about what they would like to find out about and have recorded this as a set of questions. These will hopefully be answered over this term when the children are using their research skills. The children used an atlas to locate Egypt in the World. We also talked about why the ancient Egyptians would settle around the river Nile.

In Art, the children learned about hot colours and what the word silhouette means. They then used this knowledge to create a paint and paper construction picture of the pyramids. They are going to look fantastic on the wall as part of our Egyptian display.

We continued our focus on writing adventure stories this week and linked the theme to our project. The children watched a short cartoon film about an explorer investigating an Egyptian pyramid. The character came across several obstacles along the way including being chased by mummies and having to find a way to cross a pit of lava. The children used the film as a stimulus for writing their own Egyptian pyramid adventure. Mrs Greig and I are continuing to encourage children to be accurate with punctuation and spelling as well as encouraging thoughtful descriptive language.

Monica, the teacher for the deaf, visited us on Wednesday and continued to teach the children sign language. They already know the names of animals, colours, numbers and the alphabet. This week Monica introduced them to family members' names. By the end of the session some of the children were able to sign a whole sentence. For example, 'My grandad is called John'.  Monica was very impressed with how much sign language many of the children are remembering and how enthusiastic they are.

We wish you all a lovely weekend.
Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
