Good afternoon,

For Project this week, the children learned about classification. They learned that to classify something, they have to sort things into a group according to the characteristics they have. On Tuesday they sorted things into Living and Non-living. The children realised that they could have a third category so they added  'Used to be alive things.'

The children then went on to learn about how to classify animals. They learned that there are six main categories. These are mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and insects. The children watched some short clips which explained the different characteristics of each animal group. They were then given the challenge of sorting pictures of different animals into the correct category.

For Project and Outdoor Learning, the children played the Caterpillar game. The children were split into two teams and they were given a mixture of bright pink and green wool (to represent caterpillars) to hide in the bushes. They were then given the task of finding as many of the rival team's caterpillars as they could in a set time. Many of the children had eagle eyes and most of the wool caterpillars were found. When asked at the end which colour of caterpillars were most tricky to find, the majority agreed it was the green ones. We then discussed why an animals colour is important. Some children were able to explain the colour can help camouflage them. Other children could explain that this meant it was harder for birds and other predators to find the caterpillars or other animals to eat.

We continued our block of poetry writing this week. The children wrote a colour poem. During planning they thought of as many things that reminded them of chosen colours and wrote them down. They were encouraged to include any interesting adjectives and verbs in their planning. I then used their group plans to model how to lay out the poem and to set their success criteria. Then the children wrote their own colour poems and they were super. Look out on Seesaw for the finished results.

In Maths, all of the children completed their block of learning on Multiplication. Some children also completed a short block of learning on Measure using non standard units.

Have a lovely long weekend, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig
