Good afternoon everyone,

This week in maths the children have begun a block on multiplication. We have spent the week learning about what multiplication actually is. We have looked at sets of the same amount and learned about the term 'repeated addition.' The children have also been introduced to the term 'times' and its symbol x. Some children have also completed work on understanding why the numbers in a times table sum are commutative and on using arrays to represent this.

Our workshop for literacy focus this week was understanding what an antonym is. The children were then given words from the book and they had to write down the matching antonym and illustrate it. Finally, pupils had to use the antonyms in  written sentences.

For project this week, the children had to follow written and pictorial instructions to make their own mangonel which is a medieval version of a large catapault. All of them did a great job of following the instructions and were super at helping each other with the tricky bits. The children then got the opportunity to take their mangonels outside to test. They were shown how to use a tape measure and got the chance to measure how far their pom pom projectile went. Then the children got the chance to take their group's castle outside and were given the challenge of trying to hit the castle walls using the mangonel and pom pom. This proved trickier than many thought. The children realised that they couldn't be too close or their pom pom would fly over the castle and they couldn't be too far back because the pom pom would fall short.

Next Friday is Red Nose Day. As part of the day's activities p2/3 are going to have a class talent show. The children can perform as an individual or as part of a group. They can dance, sing, act, recite a poem, do magic or tell jokes. It is not a competition and is just for fun. There is no obligation or pressure for the children to take part but it would be lovely to see their wonderful talents if they feel able to share. Please have a chat with your child. Ask them if they would like to join in and what they would like to do. They may want to practise what they want to do over the week.

Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
