Good afternoon everyone,

It has been a busy and productive first full week back after the holidays. The children have, as usual, been full of enthusiasm and positivity.

Our project focus for the first couple of weeks will be the Scots language. Mrs Greig has begun reading the children 'The Eejits.' This is the 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl translated into Scots by Matthew Fitt. It is very funny and the children have been really enjoying it.

As part of the Scots language project, the children worked together to identify Scots words within a enlarged piece of text from the Eejits. The English meaning of the words were discussed then the children chose their favourite four to write and illustrate in their jotter.

Writing this week also focused on the Scots language. The children wrote a short description of themselves in English. They then used an English/Scots word mat to change some of the English words in their writing into Scots. This is their first experience of writing using the Scots language and they did a super job over all. Next week they will be writing a short description of Mr Eejit and will be translating some of this description into Scots.

Maths this week focused on the concept of subtraction. The children revisited either subtraction within 10 or 20. This was to ensure they were very confident with the subtraction facts and the language associated with subtraction. We also looked at problems such as ? - 4 = 6 or 9 - ? = 5 and discussed the strategies we needed to use to be successful. These skills will ensure the children have a strong foundation to move onto subtraction within 20 or 100 next week.

For outdoor learning the children were introduced to the names and properties of 2d shapes. They then went outside with a partner and were given the challenge of making each 2d shape using natural materials. This was their introduction to shape and over the next few week they will be given opportunities to learn about and explore 2d and 3d shape during discovery learning, maths and project.

Mrs Greig has started a block of creative dance during PE. Previous classes have really enjoyed these sessions and I am sure this class will be the same.

All the children were sent home with a couple of Scots poems. They should choose one of the poems and try to learn the poem of by heart. They will be given the opportunity to perform this in class and a couple will be chosen to perform at reconnector.  All children will be supported with this task by Mrs Greig and myself. Some children will be able to learn the whole poem. Other children may manage one or two verses. All children should attempt to learn as much of the poem as they can and share what they manage in school.

Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Thomson
