Good afternoon everyone,

This week P2/3 had a very special task to complete. They each had to decorate a pair of angel wings. All the wings will then be used in the Kingsgate as part of their Christmas display. The children really enjoyed making the wings all sparkly.

This week's workshop for Literacy novel was 'Flat Stanley; The Epic Canadian Expedition'. This introduced the class to the country of Canada which was our focus country for our project.

As part of project this week, the children got to taste maple syrup and pancakes which is a traditional food from Canada. This treat was certainly enjoyed by many more children than the marmite last week!

The children also watched a film about a child's life in the Shetland Islands in Scotland and a child's life on the island of Iqaluit in Canada. They found out that the things the children enjoyed doing for fun were similar in both countries. There were many differences between their lives too. For example, there is snow for eight months of the year in Iqaluit and they eat polar bear!

For writing, the children continued to work on the features of an information poster to present what they had learned about Iqaluit in Canada.

During outdoor learning this week, the children were asked to look closely at the trees in the grounds. They then had to choose one to draw and had to include detail such as the texture of the bark and the shapes of the branches. Some children had the idea of using the mud to add colour to the trunk and branches of their tree. The children will get the opportunity to finish them next week. We will do the same activity in the summer term and will compare both pictures to see how the trees change with the seasons.

We are almost at the end of our addition Maths topic. Some children were completing the topic assessment this week. This will be used to assess any difficulties and next week will be used to revisit and reinforce any strategies that need further practice. Some children were looking at adding two digit numbers with bridging and also adding several numbers together. There was a great discussion about strategies they could use. It was agreed that there were many different strategies and it was best for each child to use the one that suited their understanding best.

Finally, for Science and Art this week, the children started to make polar bears. They had to mix pva glue and shaving foam together and spread it onto a paper plate. Everyone had to guess what would happen when the mixture dried. What would it look like and how would it feel? They will find out the answer on Monday when they return to school. At Discovery Learning time, they can add eyes, ears, a nose and a mouth to turn the Science experiment into the polar bear.

Have a lovely weekend.
