Good afternoon everyone,
The children have had a busy and productive first full week back after the holidays.
For the first few weeks of term, we will be focusing on understanding, reading, writing and orally using simple Scots words.
On Tuesday, the children were read the story of Wee Reid Riding Hood. It was lots of fun listening out for the Scots words and discussing what they meant. The children were given the opportunity to highlight any Scots words they could see in a short passage from the book. They then chose four of them to illustrate.
On Thursday, the children drew a picture plan of Reid Riding Hood and added in some Scots words. They then used their plan to write a short description of Reid Riding Hood using the Scots words within their writing.
The children have also had the opportunity to practise their Scots poems. Many children have already started to memorise the words to the poem they have chosen to learn for the competition. It was lovely to hear.
P2 and P1 are jointly performing at Fife Music Festival on Friday 2nd February. The performance time will be between 11.20 and 12.30. Parents will be allowed to attend as audience members. More information about the planning around the music festival will be shared as a whole school communication as soon as possible. In the meantime, the children have been busy practising their performance songs. We were delighted that Mrs Baxter came to voluntarily work with the boys and girls today. The children were so excited to see her.
For maths this week, the children have begun a block on addition to 20 skills. They have learned to add ten to a single digit. They have also added a single digit to a teens number. Most children kept the big number in their head and used the tapping strategy to support accurate counting on skills. Some children were able to add the two single digits together and then add the ten back on. For example, 13 and 2 can be worked out as 3 and 2 then add the ten back on.
Finally, for outdoor learning this week, the focus was on games that encourage quiet/listening behaviours. This is to prepare the children for taking part in the big bird watch in a few weeks time.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
