Good afternoon,

It has been lovely to see all the boys and girls back in school this week after their holiday. They have all had a very positive start to the term, showing both good listening and learning skills.

This week the maths focus was on finding 10 more/less than a given number. The children were supported in their thinking through using a number square. They learned that the numbers get bigger when you find more than and the numbers get smaller when you find less than. The children were shown that when you add or take away ten only the tens digit changes and the ones digit stays the same. They practised the strategy of either jumping up or down the columns on the number square to find 10 less or 10 more.

For Workshop for Literacy this week, the children were learning to describe a character from the story. This activity supported the children with developing their use of adjectives to help them build up a description.

For writing this week, the children listened to the story of the Spookyrumpus. They listened for all the different spooks in the story. As a class, we described what the spooks looked like and what they did. The children then chose their own spook to draw. This could be one from the book or their own idea. Later the children used their drawing to write their own version of Spookyrumpus. Some children were able to write about more than one spook. It was lovely to see some description being used as children transferred their learning from the Workhop for Literacy task.

We finally managed to finish our lighthouse pictures this week. I must say, it was worth the wait. A lot of care and effort was put into the painting of the background. The children had to have very good paintbrush control in order not to go over the lines into other areas of the picture. I was very impressed with the results.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson
