`Good afternoon,

This has been the first full week back after the holidays and the children will no doubt be tired tonight. They have all been very busy within their play opportunities and during the more structured planned teaching times.

For phonics this week, the children were focusing on a cluster of blends. These were pl, bl, gl,fl cl and sl. They were given the opportunity to build words with these sound. The children practised saying the words, sounding them out, counting the sounds and writing the sounds. They were also introduced to the suffix 's' and learned how to add it to their words. The children also practised how to use some words with the above blends in a sentence by completing a dictation.

For Workshop for Literacy this week, Mrs Greig read the story of the 'Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.' The children were learning to share their opinion and had to discuss what their favourite part of the story was. They soon learned that many children had different favourite parts because a favourite part of a story is an opinion.

On Wednesday, the children linked their writing to the 'Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.'' They had to draw and write about what kind of sandwich Mrs Grinling would make for them. The learning intention for this lesson was to ensure that capital letters and full stops were used correctly. Also that children used their taught phonics when they were able to.

We have started a topic on houses and home. We began the topic by learning about wants and needs. Through this the children learned that having a warm home was a need and a basic human right. We discussed how it was important that all our needs are met before we allow ourselves to buy some of our wants. The children learned that we can't have everything we want and we have to save up for the things we want the most.

We also looked at different types of homes that people generally live in within our community. The children used natural materials during outdoor learning to create a picture of a home. They had to ensure it had walls, a roof, a door and windows. They could add other details such as a garden if they wished.

We have completed our assesment of numbers up to 20 and beyond for some. We will begin a maths topic on numbers to 100 from next week.

I hope the boys and girls enjoy their weekend and have a well earned rest. Mrs Greig is looking forward to seeing them all on Monday morning.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson
