Good Afternoon,

This week we started our new Mathematics topic of measure. In our lessons we learned to compare and describe the length of sticks, the width of books and the capacity of water bottles. We used the mathematical language of, ‘longer, longest, shorter, shortest’ ‘thicker, thickest, thinner, thinnest’ and ‘full, half full, empty’. Next week we will be learning to compare and describe weight.

We used the well-known fairy-tale story Hansel and Gretel as an inspiring context for our literacy learning. In reading we learned to sequence a jumbled word sentence by transferring our knowledge of sentence structure. Firstly, we had to find the word with the capital letter to go at the start and the word with the full stop to go at the end. We then reorganised the rest of the words until the sentence made sense when we re-read it. In drawing club and writing we created our own sweetie house like the one the witch lived in and learned how to increase the length of our writing by adding a second sentence to describe our designs. Again, we transferred our existing knowledge of sentence writing and had to remember to put a full stop at the end of the first sentence before starting our second sentence.

Our highlights this week included outdoor learning where we learned all about recycling our food waste into compost. After watching a video called ‘Save the Scraps’ and discussing what compost is, why we should recycle our food waste and which food scraps can be recycled, we went outside to prepare our school garden compost bin and are looking forward to starting to add our daily food waste and creating nutrient, rich compost for our plants and flowers.
Another highlight was our very first Canmore Sports Day. We had much fun participating in lots of Potted Sports events including our favourites, Beat the Goalie, Coconut Shy and Hurdles. We also enjoyed competing in the flat races towards the end of our Sports Day.

We have finally reached our next Daily Mile Destination. This time we have arrived in the south American country, Chile. We were fascinated to learn that a member of our class shares his name with Chile’s capital city, Santiago, and that some penguins live in southern parts of Chile.

We hope you have a lovely weekend
