Good Afternoon,

It has been a very busy week in the P1b classroom. We have engaged in lots of exciting new learning as well as consolidating our existing skills.

Our focus in reading has been to increase our sight vocabulary. We agreed that in order to become quicker and more fluent readers, it is important that we can read our common words on sight, rather than sounding out all the letters. On Monday and Wednesday we learned two new common words, ‘little’ and ‘down’. During our reading with Miss Yorkston, we played the game ‘hunt the words’ where we had to find these new words and other common words within the sentences of our stories. We also enjoyed playing common word snap and bingo.

For writing we had a go at writing our own imaginative stories. Using the book entitled ‘The Magic Key’ as our stimulus, we imagined that each of us found a magic key which transported us to lots of fun and magical places. We continued to develop our skills in writing a ‘good’ sentence. Many of us are now able to use capital letters at the start, finger spaces in between each word and full stops at the end. Some children are also attempting to write more independently, by using our sounds knowledge to sound out the words we wish to write, ‘slow and stretchy’.

Our new sound this week was the ‘ai’ sound. We consolidated our learning to form the letters a and i that make the ‘ai’ sound and practiced spelling words with this sound by writing them in sentences.

In numeracy, we continued our learning about halves and halving, this time to include halving of amounts. After discussing that the best way to half an amount is by sharing each item between two, and not by cutting or folding them in half, we set off on our halving adventures. Please see Seesaw for video and picture examples of our learning.

Finally, I would like to say that it was lovely to have the opportunity to speak with some of you again, and share your child’s progress in learning, during our Parents Evening phone calls. I look forward to sharing more of the wonderful progress your children have made this year with you next Thursday.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend. Look out on Seesaw for Monday’s Book choices and don’t forget to comment on which book you would like to read.
