Good Afternoon,

This week we have been exploring our love of books and reading whilst celebrating World Book Week 2022. Each day this week we have engaged and participated in live online events hosted by different well-known Authors and Illustrators.

On Monday we joined world famous author Julia Donaldson for her ‘Pocketful of Songs’ sing along concert. We had lots of fun learning the words and actions to lots of songs based on beloved story characters including, The Highway Rat, Zog and the flying doctors, as well as our favourite song Superworm.

On Tuesday we learned how authors and illustrators design and create the front cover of their new books, during a very interesting tutorial by author Sara Millar.

Wednesday’s event saw us all become illustrators with author and illustrator Nick Sharratt. During the event Nick Sharratt shared his new book, ‘Super Silly Museums’ and  we developed not only our drawing skills but our listening skills, as we followed Nick’s step by step guide to drawing some of the characters. This event was by far our favourite and we can’t wait to receive our school copy of the book to explore further.

As officially World Book Day, we participated in a whole day of fun filled literacy learning on Thursday. We started the day by participating in a ‘World Book Day ‘scavenger hunt within our school library, where with a partner we had to use our checklists to find books that had different characters or objects or places on the front cover. We had lots of fun scouring the shelves and boxes and were surprised by how many different books we have that feature dogs! Our Book Swap was a huge success, with us all happily taking home a new book to add to our bedtime story collections. Thank you to all who kindly donated a book for this event. We also participated in another online drawing event, this time hosted by Axel Scheffler, who read some of his favourite stories and taught us how to draw the three little pigs in his own drawing style. This was our second favourite event of the week! Finally we ended the day by sharing our own favourite stories with each other.

However, the World Book Week fun didn’t stop there, as on Friday we joined in with one last live online event. This time we joined author Onyinye Iwu as she shared her favourite story ‘We sang across the sea’ by Benjamin Zephaniah.

We have had a truly wonderful week this week celebrating all things books and I think we might even have some future authors and illustrators in the making!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend, enjoy reading your new stories together.
