Good Afternoon,

With Tuesday being the 1st of February, we took the opportunity to have a look at our classroom calendar and discuss the important events we have upcoming this month. We have so much  including an In-Service day, two days holiday and three birthdays, Fergus on the 9th, Rosie on the 25th and even Miss Yorkston’s on the 11th. We look forward to celebrating these birthdays together as a class.

We also expanded our knowledge of different cultures and heritages by learning all about Chinese New Year. We were interested to find out, through our Digital Literacy research, that Chinese New Year occurs on a different day every year depending on the lunar cycle within the months of January and February. This year it started on the 1st of February. We also were surprised to learn that Chinese New year lasts for 15 days and is celebrated by Chinese people all over the world with many different festivals including the Festival of Kites. The highlight was creating our own indoor kite, decorating it to become symmetrical.

In Numeracy we were learning to add, using numicon as learning aids and in mental maths we were consolidating our ability to tell the number before and after any given number within 10. Next week we will continue to work on addition, expanding our use of materials from numicon, to fingers and cubes. In mental maths we will tell numbers between 2 numbers within 10.

In Literacy, we learned the sound made when the letters ‘s and h’ and ‘w and h’ go together and learned to read and spell the common words ‘she, when and what’. In reading we practised the reading strategy of looking at the first letter of an unknown word and looking at the picture for a clue and learned to read and spell the common word ‘put’.

The highlight of the week however was our writing lesson on Thursday when we had to guess where Mrs McIntosh hid Joey Bear in the school. We practised writing a full sentence ensuring it starts with a capital letter, has a finger space between each word and a full stop at the end. We were surprised to find him in the library reading books all about bears.

Have a super weekend and remember to vote for Monday’s story time book by commenting on the Seesaw post.
