Good afternoon, and Happy New year to you all!

I am delighted to be back together with the boys and girls this week, and what a busy week of learning we have had!

Our week started with a rather exciting email from Mrs McIntosh asking if our class teddy, ‘Joey’ could help her with some important jobs each day at 10’oclock. The children immediately realised that Joey bear might not know when 10 o’clock is so decided that the need to learn how to tell the time was important, therefore our new maths topic began. After discussing and researching different devices that can be used to tell the time, including sand timers, sundials stopwatches, and analogue and digital clocks we created our own analogue clocks and have been using them daily to learn to tell the time in whole hours. Next week we look forward to learning to tell the time in whole hours on a digital clock.

Our daily book choices have provided an exciting and stimulating context for learning in our Science and Phonics lessons.  On Monday the Information book ‘Seasons’ provided the perfect stimulus to use our senses outdoors, as we identified signs of Winter as part of our science learning. In literacy we shared the story, `Foxes In The Snow’ which provided the purposeful context for learning the `x’ sound and the relevance for learning to read and spell the tricky word `the’ during phonics lessons. We have also learned the sounds made by the letters ‘q’ and ‘z’ this week and have been developing our word recognition and building skills.

The highlight of the week however was the introduction of Canmore`s annual Robert Burns Poetry Competition. This year P1 have chosen to study the poem Robin Reidbriest’, by JK Annand and we are already enjoying learning the different Scots words and reciting the poem in class. We are looking forward to sharing this with you as we practise at home too.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and look out for Mondays` story-time book choice on Seesaw and remember to vote before Monday morning by commenting on the post.
