Good afternoon,

In Literacy this week we have been continuing to develop fluency in reading by increasing our common word recognition. This week, P1’s learned the three new common words, ‘make, made and here’ and enjoyed playing a variety of different games including bingo, matching pairs and hangman to support our learning. P2’s continued to use their individual common word spelling lists to practise spelling their common words and enjoyed completing the ‘newsy words’ activity.

In STEAM we received a letter from The Big Bad wolf explaining that he only blew down the straw and stick houses made by the Three Little Pigs because he was jealous of their wonderful houses and wanted one for himself. He asked us to make him a strong house which could withstand all his huffing and puffing.  The children worked collaboratively to try and help the Big Bad Wolf. Before sending the houses to him we had to test them out for their strength. In the absence of a Big Bad Wolf we used a hairdryer to provide the suitable amount of air. Many of our constructions passed the test and were sent to away to The Big Bad Wolf in Fairyland. We hope he is enjoying his new home and has apologised to the Three Little Pigs.

A highlight this week was learning about fractions in Numeracy/Mathematics. After sharing `The Runaway Pizza' story, we discussed our own favourite pizza toppings and wanted to make our own paper circle pizza. However as there were only 12 paper circles we had to decided how we were going to make enough pizzas for everyone to have some and from here our learning about fractions began. We learned that the word fraction means an equal part of a whole and the boys and girls in Primary 1 were able to half their pizza equally with a partner and then decorated their own half with toppings of the choice. Primary 2’s were able to consolidate their learning of a half and develop their understanding of a quarter by sharing the paper pizza equally with a partner and then choosing two topping to go on each quarter of the pizza.

We then went on to explore halving and quartering of lots of different paper shapes. We found that we could only half our triangle but our circle, square and rectangle would divide equally into halves and quarters. We also learned the notation of 1/2 and ¼ and had the opportunity to recognise and explain which objects and pictures were halved and quartered or not halved and quartered. Next week we will progress onto halving and quartering of numbers.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend. See you on Tuesday!

Miss Yorkston and P1/2.
