Good afternoon everyone.

The children enjoyed linking digital literacy with their writing lessons this week. They watched a vintage episode of 'Wacky Races' as a stimulus for writing. On Monday they designed a mascot for one of the characters taking part in the race and on Wednesday they designed their own racing car. This was a very motivating stimulus and the majority of children were very excited to draw and write. Mrs Greig and I are continuing to encourage finer detail in drawings. We are encouraging the children to verbalise their ideas to encourage oral story telling. Those that are ready to write are being supported to use their phonics and spelling strategies, such as clapping the syllables, to help them spell the words they want to write. Letter strips are also available to help with correct letter formation.

In Maths this week the Primary two children continued to work on place value of numbers to 20. Some children were learning about the numbers before, after or between. They used a numbers to twenty number line to support them. Other children were working on counting and making amounts accurately. They learned that you had to use one to one correspondence to ensure the count was correct.

The Primary one children began a short Maths topic on patterns. They learned a pattern repeats itself. The children got the opportunity to look for different patterns around the school. They took part in practical activities and were able to copy a pattern using beads and lego. Finally, they created their own pattern for Elmer the elephant.

For outdoor learning this week, the children went on a senses scavenger hunt. They had to use their sense of touch and sight to find natural items to fill the spaces in their egg box. It was great fun and the children all wanted to share what they had found.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the 'meet the teacher' session this afternoon. I hope you enjoyed looking round the classroom and seeing all the different areas of play available.

Mrs Greig and I look forward to seeing you all at Parent Contact very soon.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
