Good afternoon everyone,

It has been a scorcher of a week and the classroom has been extremely warm. However, the boys and girls were still able to work their socks off!

For Maths this week, the P1 children focused on different aspects of measure. They worked on weight and capacity on Monday and Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the P1 children were given the challenge of drawing round each other and cutting out their outlines. The children then decorated their paper person. On Thursday, the children used their paper person to learn more about height. They sorted their people in order of height from shortest to tallest. The children then used non standard units such as duplo bricks and hand spans to measure the heights of each paper person. The children discussed which non standard unit was the most accurate to measure with. They realised that hand spans can be different sizes depending on which child is measuring but lego duplo bricks are all the same size so are best for accuracy. The children were then introduced to a tape measure. They looked at the centimetre as a unit of measurement and used this to measure their paper person.

The P2 children were introduced to halves and quarters this week. They learned to recognise what a half and quarter of a shape looks like. They also learned that two quarters and one half are equal. The children also practised how to find one half of an amount. They linked this learning to dividing by two.

For Health and Wellbeing this week, the children learned about sun safety and staying safe in the water. The children were very able to identify the risks for both subjects and ways to ensure their safety.

On Thursday, the children were learning to sequence a short story using three pictures. This was to support them to understand a story needs a beginning, middle and end. Some children were expected to write a clear sentence for each picture. Others were encouraged to increase the detail in their writing for each picture and could write more than one sentence for each part of the story. The rest of the children were encouraged to retell the beginning, middle and end of their story orally and then they were to choose one of their sentences to write down.

On Friday, the children learned about the life cycle of a frog as part of their science project. They listened to the Growing Frogs story and then acted out the life cycle of a frog. Finally, they drew a diagram of the life cycle.

I do hope you enjoy this weekend's sunny weather.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig
