Good afternoon everyone,

This week, the primary two children completed their work on place value. They learned how to round a number to the nearest ten. They also completed an assessment which will help Mrs Greig and I identify any gaps in understanding.

The primary two children were also introduced to the concept of multiplication. They learned how make different sets of amounts. For example 3 sets of 4 or 5 sets of 2. They also learned to use repeated addition. This was linked to the finding sets activity. The children learned that 3 sets of 4 can also be represented as 4 + 4 + 4. Next week, the children will be introduced to the times symbol and word. The children will then learn how this is a quick way of representing repeated addition.

The primary one children revised coin recognition at the beginning of the week. They were then given the opportunity to find the total of a given amount of coins up to 10p. They then practised paying for goods and learned that there are a number of ways to make the same total using different values of coins. The children also learned how to add prices of items together to find the total within 10p. Next week, they will learn how to work out how much money they have left once goods are paid for.

For writing this week, the children used the notes they had made on their fact sheet to write a factual report about a hedgehog. They had to turn their notes back into clear sentences, ensuring each sentence had a capital letter and full stop.

For gym this week, the children started a block of work on ball skills. They learned how to stop a ball with control using their feet. They used the side of their feet to help them control the ball and the sole of their feet to stop the ball.

For science, the children were given a set of pictures of different living things. In small groups, they had to sort them into groups. There was not set criteria given and the children had to decide how they were going to sort them. This was a good assessment of their critical thinking skills, observational skills and of what they may already know about animal classification. The next steps from this lesson will be to learn which animals are carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. The children will also learn to classify animals with and without backbones. They will also classify animals into mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. This will be explored over this term.

I hope you all have a lovely holiday weekend and Mrs Greig will look forward to seeing the children on Tuesday.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
