Good afternoon everyone.

It has been lovely to see all the children back in class this week. They have come back as cheery and enthusiastic as ever.

This week the P1 children were learning the new sound 'ou' and the P2 children were learning the sound e-e. All children practised reading and writing words with the taught sound in them.

Mrs Greig has started a new class novel this week. It is James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. She also introduced the connective 'and' to the P1s and 'because' to the P2s. The children had to use their connective in a sentence that described what they thought of James' Aunties. The P2 children also learned a mnemonic to help them spell because. It was, 'big elephants can always understand small elephants.

For maths this week, the P1 children finished off their topic on subtraction to 10. They learned the facts for take away from 9 and 10. They also linked their knowledge of addition and subtraction through the completion of number family problems.

The P2 children were introduced to counting in jumps of 2, 3, 4 and 5. They used a number square to record what they were doing. They also identified odd and even numbers in two digit numbers. The children learned that you had to look at the number in the ones column to determine whether the number was odd or even. We finished the week by finding the number half way between a given pair of numbers. Number lines were used to support this learning.

In ICT this week, the children were learning about staying safe online. We are using the Jessie and Friends resource from the CEOP website and they are suitable for children age 4-7.

The children were introduced to simple note taking in writing. They are going to write a report about a hedgehog next week. Some children read a simple text about a hedgehog. They had to highlight any words that described a hedgehog or told them what the hedgehog ate and where it lived. They then chose one favourite fact to highlight. Some children listened for the above facts when I read them the text. When all the facts were highlighted or listened to, the children noted them in a factfile. They will turn these notes into full sentences next week when they write their report.

As part of our topic, the children learned to give examples of living and non living things. They learned living things need oxygen, food and water. They also grow and reproduce. The children also learned that some objects were 'once living.' For example, books are made from trees that were once living. We went on a walk in the playground and drew examples of living and non living things in our school grounds.

Have a fantastic weekend. Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
