Good afternoon,

In maths this week, the P1/2 children completed their maths block on subtraction to 20. During this block, they have been shown many different strategies to use when calculating answers and have always had the opportunity to support their conceptual thinking using Numicon. The assessment will support Mrs Greig and I to see where there may be gaps in thinking and what children's next steps will be.

P1 have been working on the concept of addition to 10. They have learned different strategies to support them. This has included the tapping method and using their fingers. We have also discussed putting the biggest number first and adding on the smaller number. The children have also used Numicon to explore missing addends. For example, they had to make 9 and were given the number five. The children found the nine Numicon and then covered it with the five Numcion. They then could see that they needed to add a four Numicon to make the total of nine.

In Workshop for Literacy this week the children were learning about adjectives and had to listen for them in the class novel. They then drew a picture of one of the Twits and wrote a few sentences to describe them.

For writing this week, the children reinforced their learning about instructions. We used Lucas' instructions from last week as a WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) and created our success criteria for the lesson. The children had to write instructions for the Oobleck they got to play with as part of their science last week. They remembered that instructions had to be in order and should include bossy doing words. Some children's next steps are to make sure they do not miss out any important information. I reminded them that it was important to know how many cups of cornflour and water were needed.

In Spanish, we were learning the names of the colours. To help us we played some Smartboard games. We are hoping to play a playground or gym hall colour game to help reinforce the names at a later date.

It is Valentine's Day next week and because of this the children created a stained glass heart that can be hung on the window. It will come home as part of a card.

In science this week, the children learned all about dissolving and investigated what materials are soluable or insoluable.

Have a lovely weekend. Kind regards, Mrs Thomson
