Good afternoon everyone,

The highlight of this week has to be the participation of P1/2 in the music festival. The children worked so hard to learn their songs and their hard work certainly paid off. They were absolutely wonderful on the day. As a teacher, it was also a delight to see the excitement on the children's faces as they took part in their first trip out of school. Even the bus trip was a special experience.

Mrs Greig is now busy teaching the children a dance that the children will be performing at the local schools' cluster creative dance festival. I am sure this will be another event that the children will shine at.

For writing this week, the children learned about the important features of instructions. They then wrote their own set of instructions to explain how to make a fatball bird feeder. The children were able to remember and share what they did on Friday at outdoor learning. They drew pictures to go with their instructions. The task was a challenge but all the children tried very hard and were supported when necessary.

For project this week, the children have learned about different matter. They have learned that matter can be a solid, liquid or gas. They found out that there is a special mixture called oobleck, made from cornstarch and flour, that is both a liquid and solid at the same time! The children also experimented with changing a solid into a liquid by melting an ice cube.  They also learned how a gas will fill the space within a container. They got a surprise when they added some effervescent tablets to their freezer bag with the water and it created a gas. The freezer bag inflated until the bag burst open!

The primary one children focused on 2d shape for maths this week. They are very good at recognising and naming a triangle, rectangle, square and circle. The children got a chance to describe the shapes, draw pictures by drawing round them, recognise shapes within a picture and in the environment; and they also traced and drew the shapes.

The primary two children have almost completed the maths block on subtraction. They learned a new strategy to use this week. They learned they could find the answer to a subtraction by adding on. For example, if the sum was 20 - 15 = ?, the children could think to themselves, what could I add to 15 to make 20?

In ICT this week, the children were continuing to practise logging onto the computer themselves using a username and password. They were also practising using a search engine to find Sumdog. They were then having a go at trying to log into Sumdog. If you have a spare five minutes at home, I would be very grateful if you could show your child how to use their log in details to access Sumdog. The more practise they get the better.

Finally, just another wee reminder to check that you have chosen your child's dinners/packed lunches for next week. Thank you for your help.

Have a lovely weekend. Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
