Good afternoon everyone,

We have been very busy again in P1/2 this week.

In maths this week, the P1 children finished their work on digital and analogue clock. They also completed a short block of learning about recognising doubles and calculating the doubles total.

P2 continued to develop a deeper understanding of the strategies they can use to support them to take away from numbers up to 20. The Numicon is proving the most favourite concrete support because it is so visual. We have started to look at subtractions facts for all the numbers between 11 and 20. This work will continue into next week.

Our Workshop for Literacy focus this week was to understand and recognise nouns from listening to a text and looking at a picture from the class novel.

We had a wonderful time on Wednesday celebrating all things Scottish. All the boys and girls managed to stand in front of their peers and perform part or all of their poem. Some children were even able to add in some actions. I was proud of them all for having the confidence to perform. Maggie, Lucas, Emilia and Lily were our finalists who got to perform for Mrs Howie. Well done to them.

On Wednesday, we also learned about why we celebrate Burn's day and what sort of things people do to celebrate it. The children got to listen to the Gruffalo in Scots and were able to recognise a number of Scots words in the story. They also got the chance to taste some Scottish food and to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Scottish.

On Thursday the boys and girls were supported to write a sentence or a factual report about a robin. I picked the subject of birds to tie in with the Big Family Birdwatch and the Big School Bird Watch. Please look on Seesaw to read your child's efforts. All the children tried very hard to ensure accurate capital letters and full stops. It was clear that they were also trying hard to use their phonics.

In PE, the gymnastics focus this week was on different kinds of jumping. We practised jumping from 2 feet to 2 feet, 2 feet to 1 foot, 1 foot to 2 feet and 1 foot to 1 foot. The children then got the opportunity to put these jumping skills into action using the apparatus and gym equipment. Look out for the video on Seesaw that shows the children in action.

Finally, the children made bird feeders in outdoor learning as part of their work on the Big Bird Watch. They will be bringing them home tonight and can be used to encourage more birds into your garden. We will be doing our own bird watching in the school grounds next week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
