Good afternoon everyone,

What a fantastic four days Mrs Greig and I have had with the P1//2 class.

P2 continued to develop their addition skills and, over the week, worked on addition facts for 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. The children are improving their understanding of sums with missing addends and are becoming more confident at using the Numicon to support their thinking.

P1 were extending their number skills using the numbers 1-5. They used the Numicon to explore the numbers before/after/between a chosen number. The children also got the opportunity to subitise and to mentally add numbers together.

On Thursday we continued our work on information handling. The children extended their learning of using a tally chart to collect information and a pictogram for displaying information. This week, the chidlren had to draw their own pictures to represent information. They were collecting data about the amount of left over fruit and veg at the end of a school week. They used their pictograms to answer questions. For example, what fruit or veg had the most left over? How many apples and bananas were left altogether?

Workshop for literacy this week focused on the skill of being able to share the main idea of the chapter. The children had to listen very carefully to what was being read to help them with their answer. Most children could say that the chapter was explaining that Plop the owl was afraid of the dark.

For writing this week, the children were read the story 'Stuck Inside.' They then had to think about what imaginative things they would do if they were stuck inside. There were many ideas including making scarecrows, sailing to an island in a pirate ship and sitting on the couch imagining they were climbing a snowy mountain.

The highlight of the week must be the amazing McDougalls show that took place on Tuesday afternoon. The children had an absolutely brilliant time and loved joining in with all the songs. They were all a real credit to the school.

We hope you have a lovely weekend. Next week, we are getting a special visitor on Friday who will be helping us make some yummy healthy snacks. This ties in with the work we have done about the Eatwell plate and germs.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig.
