Good afternoon everyone,

This week, the P1 children consolidated the phonics that have been taught so far. This allowed us to assess who needed more practise to support them to recognise all the taught sounds: a, t, s, n . i and p. These children were given extra opportunity to further practise and explore them. All the P1 children were also given the opportunity to read and write 2 and 3 letter words. Next week the children will be taught three new sounds; h, ck and e. Phonics will be taught on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

In maths the children have been using their number to 5 knowledge to add to 5 and to complete missing addends problems. For example 2 + 3 = or 4 + ? =. The Numicon has really supported the children with gaining these skills. Some still need to physically use the pieces while others are now able to visualise the pieces in their mind to support the addition process.

The P2 children were working on three new end blends this week. These were -nt, nd and mp. They had the opportunity to generate words with these end blends. The children also made words using the magnetic letters and used segmenting to ensure they spelt the words correctly.

The P2 children were developing their number knowledge of addition facts for 11, 12 and 13. They used the Numicon to support their understanding of straight forward addition sums such as 6 + 7 = and to investigate missing addends sums such as 5 + ? = 12.

For their Workshop for Literacy activity this week, the children continued to develop their comprehension skills through creating a character description of the old lady from the Owl That Was Afraid of the Dark.

The children continued to develop their imaginative writing, phonics and punctuation skillls through their Drawing Club task on Thursday. They had the opportunity to watch an episode of the vintage cartoon 'Willow the Wisp.' The children then had to think of what Edna the evil witch would turn them into. There were lots of good ideas including a bubble that would float away, a plant, a red bull and a horse.

In ICT this week, we were lucky to have the support of some older pupils who helped the children log onto the computers. This meant they had plenty time this week to explore and play Teach Your Monster to Read. Lots of children enjoyed the game and are looking forward to playing it at home too.

For project this week, we discussed healthy and unhealthy food. We talked about why some foods are unhealthy and why they should only be eaten in small amounts. We also looked at the Eatwell plate to find out about the variety of foods we should be eating and in what quantities. Next week we will be learning about germs and the need for good hand washing. These learning experiences will lead onto an opportunity to create a healthy snack with the community champion from Asda. This will take place in a couple of weeks time.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Greig
