Good afternoon,

We started our week with a big story picture featuring Lee who Loves Licking Lots Of Lolli-pops. A fun way to develop our phonic awareness was finding lots of things in the picture beginning with the 'l' sound.
This story sparked a discussion about healthy eating. We used the `Eat well Guide’ to learn about the different food groups and to see how much of each food group makes up a healthy diet. One of the things we noticed was that the fruit and vegetable group, ( along with the carbohydrate group) make up the largest part of a Healthy Diet. We also learned the health benefits of eating fruit and vegetables and that we should have 5 portions a day. Numeracy was applied to work out how many portions we had already eaten each day and therefore how many portions would still have to be eaten in the evening to make the 5 portions.

Other numeracy activities deriving from this mini-topic of fruit was in collecting, organising, displaying and interpreting information about our favourite fruits on a graph. We also used venn diagrams to organise and interpret information about fruit we like.

Auditory sequencing skills were developed as we played the memory game of “ I went to the shops and I bought…….”. Impressively some of the children were able to recall up to 10 pieces of shopping, in order. Visual sequencing was developed as we recalled the food eaten by the caterpillar in the story,` The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.Visuo motor skills, were refined as we copied pictures of fruit bowls and greengrocer shops. Pictures of fruit were also used in practising breaking words into syllables, in generating rhyme and in continuing phonic awareness. All of which will be of great value next term when we start reading and spelling and sums.

In digital literacy the children were introduced to the idea of a search engine and in using appropriate keywords as we learned where different fruits came from and what their life cycles looked like.

We concluded our week with preparing ( slicing, peeling and cutting) a variety of the fruits we have been researching, and tasting a fruit smoothie.

Have a lovely October break,
Mrs.Davie, P1 and Biscuit.
